La Lana Wools, Exquisite Plant Dyed Yarns

La Lana Wools' Fiber Arts Exhibit

Fiber Frolics Show
October 01 - 15, 2006
OPENING RECEPTION
Sunday, October 1st, 4 - 6 PM

La Lana Wools presents an exhibit of fiber arts by six fiber sensations who are at the forefront of creativity for their specific mediums. Stretching(quite literally in some cases) the boundaries and revealing new dimensions of their materials this group of artists includes the following:

Valentina Devine - A knitter and crocheter who works
exclusively without patterns this artist has been known as Valentina “no rules” Devine. Creating an extraordinarily vast array of garments using basic shapes that are then pieced together Devine was one of the pioneers of this technique which she also teaches in her workshops called “Knitting Without Boundaries.

An exuberant colorist who also has a passion for texture each piece is a bold statement of extravagance born of simplicity.

Helen Summers - Formally a research lab technician at Yale School of Medicine Summers became a full time weaver in 1985. Exploring the more intricate and
subtle dimensions of weaving Summers primarily works in a technique known as Shadow
Weave which alternates dark and light threads to produce stunningly graphic patterns. The minute level on which she works to create her elegant scarves, shawls, blouses and jackets is awe inspiring. Summers has also been mastering the dye techniques of Shibori and mechanical resist using these skills to create linings that are as visually interesting and astounding as the exterior of the garments.

Ayala Talpai - A true folk artist Talpai has explored nearly every imaginable medium known to the world of crafts. Having discovered felting needles (a tool that
had almost exclusively been used in industry) in the mid eighties Talpai was instrumental in introducing this technique to the fiber arts world. Talpai, the woman, exudes creativity and a presence that reminds one of the fairy realm. This quality is present in her sculptural and wearable art work that ranges from friendly dragons with gossamer wings and pirouetting sheep with tutus to hairy horned helmets and fanciful blouses inspired by Guatemalan fabric. Anyone interested in this relatively new art form should not
miss seeing this artist’s work.

Deborah Dant - From delicate infant garments that resemble Tibetan stupas to adult size vests that announce regalia Dant has proven that crochet work needn’t be bulky or crude. While many needle artists set aside crochet for the seemingly more delicate and
diverse art of knitting Dant refined the technique that is revealed in garments that exhibit a finesse in drape. Also a Jungian analyst Dant’s interest in the human psyche can be detected in her sculptural works, some of which remind one of the anatomy of the brain.
This artist’s work exemplifies both the literal and abstract use of fiber while celebrating a love of texture and color.

Sharon Cahn - With a love of textiles going back to childhood Cahn has been sewing, knitting and weaving ever since. Having developed a unique welted knitting
technique that enhances the rounded female form, the vertical corrugation effect allows for a movement and drape in her garments that flatters the form. Using all of her various skills in each garment the works are eclectic with dramatic tactile contrasts. A wild
bird herself Cahn’s unusual vests, jackets, hats and headdresses often incorporate the use of a variety of feathers meticulously secured and thoughtfully placed to give her pieces a proud peacock-like statement.

Katherine Maxwell - The youngest of the group Maxwell’s pieces reveal the sensibility of an artist who is not only aware of pop and underground culture but also maintains a thread of awareness that leads back to the wild and free spirited nature of both our human and animal ancestors. Working by hand and on altered looms and knitting machines Maxwell acknowledges inspiration from traditional and Navajo weavings. Raw and powerful, yet fragile and diaphanous her wall hangings and garments for both men and women have been seen in high fashion magazines and galleries
from Milan to Santa Fe.

All of the artists currently reside in New Mexico with the exceptions of Ayala Talpai (Oregon) and Sharon Cahn (California).
